Democratic-Republican ; Democratic 1827-1839
John Calhoun (1827 - 1832) / Martin Van Buren (1833-1837)
Andrew Jackson was a president for the people, and the common man. But as a president, he only gets a "C-" in my grade book. While there was little effort on his part, he caused the trail of tears, he vetoed the second bank of america, and his spoils system was not well liked by the public or anyone else for that matter.
One of the most significant moves during his presidency was the Indian Removal Act. Following the act came The Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek, and the Treaty of New Echota, which required thousands of indians to move to the Mississippi River valley. The treaties lost the indians approval of Jackson, and was the cause of the trail of tears.
Jackson also vetoed the second bank of america, to try to help out the agricultural culture in the south. Sadly though that backfired and was the cause of the Panic of 1837, leading the country into a depression that lasted for years. At the time the veto was a bad move. Also the Nullification Crisis happened during his reign, also known as the tariff of abominations. It strained the south while the north was unaffected.
Jacksons contriversial Spoils system, changed members in the cabient. Although a "spring cleaning" was long overdue in the white house, Jackson took that to his advantage and appointed people of his party. He also fired more then rehired, not gaining much.
Overall Jackson was an average president. He was not horrible to the country, he held it under control but he also did not achieve much at the time.
